Parallels Desktop 20 is software that I have used daily for years. Some time ago, I switched from VMware Workstation and never returned. Right now, they introduced a new version of it—number 20.

Parallels Desktop is a popular virtualization software that allows users to run Windows, Linux, and other operating systems simultaneously with macOS without rebooting.

What is Parallels Desktop?

First things first. What are we talking about?

Parallels Desktop is a virtualization software that enables users to run multiple operating systems, including Windows, Linux, and others, on a Mac without needing to reboot. This software is prevalent among Mac users who need to operate software only available for Windows or other operating systems. In a most simple way, it allows you to run a computer inside of your computer 🙂

What’s new in Parallels Desktop 20

Of course, AI. Like many other companies also, Parallels introduced AI capabilities to their software. With Parallels Desktop 20 and AI Package, developers can learn how to work with AI and start integrating it into their apps or build new solutions – all in the comfort of their Mac. They can also use DevOps service to share VMs easily while working in private catalogs in the Visual Studio Code extension. The ability to use snapshots for macOS VMs on Apple silicon Macs to save quickly and restore the system state for an even more flexible development and testing process;

An improved Parallels Packer plugin for a faster macOS VM installation in express mode, automating the initial setup process using the Apple Vision framework (OCR); An enhanced Parallels executor for GitLab runner that now allows the use of macOS VMs on Apple silicon Mac computers.

What else you should know?

Seamless Integration: One of Parallels Desktop’s most notable features is its Coherence mode, which allows Windows applications to run on a Mac as if they were native macOS applications. This seamless integration helps maintain a fluid workflow, eliminating the need to switch between different operating system environments.

Performance: Parallels Desktop optimizes performance without overly taxing your Mac’s hardware. It efficiently manages computer resources, allowing for smooth macOS and virtualized OS operation. This is particularly advantageous for software developers, IT professionals, and businesses that rely on cross-platform applications.

Power management is also important here. I found that running VN’s does not greatly impact your device’s power consumption. Personally, there are some VMs that always run on my device in the background.

User-Friendly Interface: I like the interface. After you set up it the usage is straight forward, just press start button and you are ready to go.

With a straightforward setup process and an intuitive interface, Parallels Desktop makes it easy for beginners to use virtual environments. It simplifies the management of various operating systems and their applications, making it accessible to users who may not be very tech-savvy.

Wide Range of Supported Operating Systems: Besides supporting various versions of Windows and Linux, Parallels also offers options for older operating systems, which can be crucial for running legacy applications in business environments.

So what’s essential?

  • Instead of a few computers, you can run everything on one device.
  • Streamline workflows, making it easier to set up and manage your CI/CD pipelines across different environments.
  • Reliable platform for building and testing across Windows, Linux, and now ARM architectures
  • NEW: AI models readily accessible with tools and code examples to help quickly and easily develop AI applications and apply them
