IT career in 2025 is not an easy topic anymore. The time when IT guys announced that they wanted to change jobs and received many well-paid offers has gone, and I am not sure if those times will return.

The IT industry is changing rapidly, and as we move into 2025, artificial intelligence (AI) dominates the conversation. AI has been a hot topic in every tech journal and business discussion for over two years. But what does it mean for IT professionals? Does it change everything, or is it just another overhyped trend?

In this article, I will share my perspective on the future of IT careers, the decisions I am making now to secure the next 10-15 years, and how to stay relevant while maintaining a good work- life balance and financial stability.

Is AI Changing the Game for IT Career in 2025?

Many of you may have noticed that I haven’t posted much on my blog. The reason? LinkedIn has become the primary source of clients, projects, and income for many others, including me. Personal branding is now more critical than ever for career growth.

I’ve been in IT for over 25 years, with more than a decade specializing in Microsoft 365 (formerly Office 365). Over the last five years, I’ve focused on modern workplace solutions and cybersecurity—a conscious decision based on where I see the most long-term value.

But I also understand that many of you are looking for guidance on how to adapt. After 25 years in the industry, I’ve seen almost everything, but the rise of AI is undoubtedly unique. For me, AI is a huge time-saver, making research, ideation, and execution more efficient.

I frequently use Perplexity for search (because Google sucks as is now flooded with ad-driven garbage) and ChatGPT for brainstorming ideas.

However, I want to clarify that every piece of content I create is my own. AI is a tool, not a replacement for originality. And that’s where the problem lies – AI-generated content is flooding the internet with low-quality material.

Cybersecurity: A Safe Haven in an AI-Driven World

Regarding career trends, cybersecurity remains one of the few fields where AI is unlikely to replace human expertise anytime soon. According to various industry reports, cybersecurity professionals are in high demand, and automation alone won’t solve complex security challenges.

Here are some numbers for the cyber security market:

• The cyber security market is projected to grow by 10.48% from 2015 to $10.5 trillion annually by 2025
• The global cost of cyber crime is expected to surge from $3 trillion in 2015 to $10.5 trillion annually by 2025
• Cyber security technology and service providers have a $2 trillion market opportunity
• There is an average of 2,200 incidents per day
• There are an estimated 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs by the end of 2025.

Why Cybersecurity Remains a Strong Choice for an IT Career in 2025

1. Cost Barrier – Advanced AI security tools, like Microsoft Security Copilot, are incredibly expensive, limiting their adoption to only the largest enterprises. I do not believe that SMBs will soon be able to afford it.
2. Limited Practical Use – I had a chance to play with Security Copilot. It’s nice, but we still need an SOC guy. It’s helpful but far from a game-changer.

My Career Shift: From Microsoft 365 to Cybersecurity

I specialized in SharePoint and Teams for years but intentionally pivoted to modern workplace and cyber security in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. However, I am also focusing on expanding beyond Microsoft’s ecosystem to future-proof my career. Your IT career must have a plan—without one, you risk becoming obsolete.

But one thing remains the same: An IT career in 2025 means constant improvement. If you do not improve, you will fall apart.

How to Get Started in IT (Without Falling for Scams)

Avoid boot camps that promise to transform you ‘From taxi driver to Hacker in 3 Months’.  Many tech boot camps promise rapid transitions into cybersecurity or IT careers, but IT takes time, learning, and experience. There are no shortcuts here.

Age or previous work experience won’t disqualify you, but success requires a well-thought-out strategy.

My Advice for Career Changers

• Set clear, achievable goals for the next few months.
• Choose a specialization that aligns with future demand.
• Gain hands-on experience through real-world projects, labs, and certifications.

For example, my last project was awesome because:

1. It was financially rewarding.
2. It allowed me to work with Microsoft Sentinel (SIEM), expanding my cybersecurity skill set.

These decisions weren’t random – I  added another valuable skill to my portfolio.

• If you’re changing jobs, choose companies that offer career development opportunities.
• Avoid companies that limit your exposure to new technologies.

The Harsh Reality of an IT Career in 2025

IT is NOT an easy money-making machine. Many assume IT is a goldmine of high salaries and easy jobs, but that’s only half the story. Well, those times have gone. The reality is:

• IT careers require constant learning and skill upgrades.
• AI is making lower-skilled IT roles redundant.
• Companies expect IT professionals to keep up with ever-changing technologies.

If you neglect your professional development, you risk becoming irrelevant in the industry. You are out!
